FUE is one method of harvesting follicular units for hair transplantation. It can be appropriate for some patients, but it is not automatically better than FUT and it should not be promoted as scar-free, painless or guaranteed to produce a particular density. The right technique depends on the diagnosis, donor supply, scalp characteristics and long-term hair-loss plan.
Potential advantages of FUE
No linear donor scar
FUE removes follicular units individually, so it usually avoids the single linear scar associated with strip harvesting. However, each extraction creates a small wound and healed dot-like scars can remain. Their visibility depends on punch size, extraction pattern, hair length and individual healing.
May suit shorter hairstyles
Because there is no single linear scar, some patients who prefer shorter hair may find FUE more compatible with their styling goals. This does not mean scars will always be invisible.
Donor harvesting can be distributed
Individual extraction allows the surgeon to spread harvesting across an appropriate donor zone. Conservative planning is still essential because donor follicles are finite and over-harvesting can leave visible thinning.
Recovery pattern differs from FUT
FUE does not require closure of a strip incision, so donor-area recovery can differ from FUT. Even so, patients can experience swelling, tenderness, crusting, numbness or temporary discomfort. Return to work and exercise varies with the size of the procedure and individual healing.
Claims FUE should not make
FUE does not inherently provide more hairs per graft, a fixed percentage improvement in yield, guaranteed graft survival or the longest-lasting result. Outcome depends on diagnosis, donor quality, graft handling, recipient-site planning, healing and future loss of non-transplanted hair.
