Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and liposuction are different body-contouring procedures. Neither is a weight-loss treatment, and the better option depends on the patient’s anatomy, skin quality, muscle laxity, fat distribution, health and goals.

How they differ
Liposuction removes selected deposits of subcutaneous fat through small incisions. It does not reliably tighten substantially loose skin or repair separated abdominal muscles.
Abdominoplasty removes selected excess abdominal skin and fat and may repair abdominal muscle separation when clinically appropriate. It generally involves a larger incision and a longer recovery than liposuction.
Who may be considered?
Liposuction may be considered when localized fat is the main concern and skin elasticity is reasonably good. Abdominoplasty may be discussed when loose abdominal skin, significant laxity or muscle separation is present. Pregnancy plans, smoking or nicotine use, medical conditions and weight stability are important parts of assessment.
Recovery and risks
Recovery varies and should not be reduced to a fixed universal number of days. Both procedures can involve bleeding, infection, fluid collection, contour irregularity, scarring, sensation changes, blood clots and anaesthesia-related complications. Abdominoplasty has additional wound-healing and scar considerations because it is a larger operation.
