Liposuction requires small skin incisions so a cannula can reach the treatment area. Because the skin is cut, some degree of scarring is possible. The important question is not whether a scar exists, but how noticeable it may become as healing progresses. Scar appearance varies between individuals and cannot be predicted with certainty before surgery.
Where liposuction incisions are placed
Incision number and position depend on the body area being treated, the amount and distribution of fat, the technique used and the surgeon’s access requirements. Surgeons generally try to keep access points limited and position them thoughtfully, but a discreet location does not guarantee that a scar will become invisible.
What can affect scar visibility?
- Individual healing tendency: genetics, previous scar history and skin characteristics can influence the way an incision heals.
- Pigment changes: some people develop temporary or longer-lasting darkening or lightening around an incision.
- Keloid or hypertrophic scarring: people with a personal or family history of raised scars should discuss this before surgery.
- Infection, wound tension or delayed healing: complications around an incision may affect the final scar.
- Sun exposure during healing: ultraviolet exposure may make pigment changes more noticeable in some patients.
There is no universal point at which a liposuction scar “disappears.” Many scars soften and mature gradually, but the timeline and final appearance differ from person to person. If a scar becomes increasingly raised, painful, itchy, dark, widened or otherwise concerning, it should be reviewed rather than assumed to be normal.
Planning matters before the procedure
A pre-operative consultation should include discussion of previous scars, pigmentation tendency, smoking or nicotine exposure, relevant medical conditions and any medicines or supplements that may affect surgery or healing. Patients should not stop prescription medicines on their own; medication changes should be made only with the treating clinician’s guidance.
